The Amazing Chip Zdarsky
Chip Zdarsky, for all intents and purposes, is a man of many talents: newsman, comic book writer, Eisner nominee (and winner!), internet sensation, all-around awesome guy, and that’s just to name a few. Whatever it is you can think of, Chip has probably been there and done that. Well, what can anyone expect from such a shining beacon of joy in the comic book industry? It’s all par for the course when it comes to Mr. Zdarsky. And in case I failed to mention it earlier, he is arguable one of the most – well – let’s just say “intense” lovers out there. And as a fun fact for you, Chip actually ran for public office (as Mayor, no less) of Toronto not more than a decade ago in what is probably one of the funniest and most entertaining campaigns I’ve ever seen. But all those achievements I have said before pale in comparison when you find out that the man has actually had quite the deep and personal relationship with food chain Applebee’s before. Hey, you’re not called one of the most “intense” lovers out there for no good reason, after all. I guess what I am trying to say here is that you can forget about all of the Chris Evanses and Johnny Depp, and all those other beefcakes you probably have wet dreams of at night: prepare to get stimulated with the magic of none other than Chip Zdarsky!
All right, all right. To begin with, Chip Zdarsky is really the nom de plume of Canadian comic (both the funny books and of humor in general) art and writing. Now, before the man known as Chip came to be known as such, he was born as a mere mortal named Steve Murray. Fortunately for us, destiny smiles and it gave the young Mr. Murray the idea that a man may choose his own name, hence the Zdarsky alter-ego. In truth, however, the man is so multifaceted that he has experimented with more than one pen name throughout his career. For one, there’s “Johnny Diamond,” which works both as a name for a 70s porn star and a comic book artist, incindentally. Talking about his career now, Mr. Zdarsky started his career as a cartoonist and contributing writer for Canada’s own National Post, a very popular and strong newspaper company that, if I’m not mistaken, still runs to this day albeit without all the Zdarksy magic the man can give.
As of now, Chip is making great use of his talents as the co-creator of the Image Comics series Sex Criminals, along with superstar writer Matt Fraction. With Suzie and the whole cast of infinitely interesting characters from the series, it landed Chip his first Eisner back in 2014 for Best New Series. And I have to say, it’s still going strong. Having mentioned that, I strongly suggest you pick up a copy of the TPBs or HCs of this beautiful series about time-stopping orgasms and heists; it’s worth more than the price of admission.
